Look beyond the length of gutter you can see
A valley collects water from adjoining roof slopes and may discharge towards a short gutter or hopper. When water appears at that point, the cause can sit higher up the route. A straightforward-looking overflow is not always an obstruction in the nearest trough.
Tell us whether the problem is where roofs meet, below a dormer or beside a chimney. If the arrangement is concealed from the garden, say so rather than climbing for a better view. The inspection needs to allow for parts that cannot be assessed from below.
Older metal fittings need their condition understood
Where a property retains metal gutters or hopper heads, condition and fixing points matter. A local joint defect is a different proposition from extensive deterioration across several lengths. The material should be identified before replacement parts or a larger change are discussed.
Keep information from previous work, including where replacement sections meet older fittings. Ask whether a proposal retains sound components and how it connects to the existing roofline. One visible leak is not a full assessment of the remaining system.
- Existing material
- Compatible joints
- Clear outlets
Why a recurring hopper overflow deserves attention
A hopper receives water before it enters a downpipe. Debris at the opening, an obstructed pipe or an issue in the incoming route can cause overflow. Staining beneath it tells you where water escaped, but not necessarily why.
Describe the frequency: every shower, a prolonged downpour or soon after leaf fall. If an internal room is affected, record its position relative to the roof. Coverings or flashing may also need consideration rather than assuming the hopper is responsible.

Preparing an NW7 property for an assessment
Mention narrow paths, garden structures and any section hidden behind an extension. Explain whether the roof is original or a later addition. An approximate building height helps; measuring at the eaves yourself is unnecessary.
For a heritage-sensitive building, establish what advice is needed before altering external details. A repair brief should identify the defect, suitable materials, access and intended checks. That provides a clearer basis for comparing proposals than a headline price per metre.

ANSWERS FOR THIS AREA
Mill Hill gutter repair questions
Can a hopper be why my Mill Hill wall gets wet?
It can be the escape point. The cause may be debris, the connected pipe or incoming roof drainage. Note the weather and first place water appears rather than assuming the hopper needs replacement.
Is a leaking metal gutter always beyond repair?
No. A joint problem and widespread deterioration are different. Ask for the surrounding lengths and supports to be considered before deciding between repair and replacement.
My house has several roof valleys. What should I mention?
Describe which slopes meet above the leak and whether extensions changed the arrangement. Ground-level photos of the overall roof shape can help plan an inspection.
